How to Evolve Units in Anime Expeditions

Evolution is how you push units into stronger forms with new abilities, higher stat grades, and sometimes entirely new attack animations. Anime Expeditions replaces endless legend-stage grinding with a clearer system: unit-specific evolution items, a crafting station, unit quest trials, and evolution sprites that preview exactly what your unit becomes. This guide explains the full evolution pipeline and walks through Megumat — the Megumi-inspired Secret unit — as a concrete example.

Evolution Station and Sprites

Visit the Upgrades area and interact with the Evolution station. Select any eligible unit to see its evolution tree: current form, evolved form preview (the evolution sprite), new passive abilities, upgraded stats, and a checklist of required materials. Evolution sprites show the full character model transformation before you commit — Megumat's evolution, for instance, reveals an upgraded Ten Shadows-inspired form with expanded AoE visuals and a new cursed technique animation. If a unit cannot evolve yet, the station grays out the option and lists what you still need.

How to Obtain Evolution Materials

Each unit requires a unique evolution item plus generic materials and Yen. There are three main farming paths. Unit Quests: summoning a Mythic unlocks a trial stage in the Quest menu — beat it to earn that unit's specific item (Burning Fruit for Sabo, Elixir of Life for Hollow, Giant Hammer for Diane). Crafting: combine drop materials at the Crafting station in the Upgrades area. Check the Evolution station for Megumat's required item (typically a cursed technique material farmed from School Grounds high-star stages or Spirit Cities raid Act 2). Complete Megumat's unit quest trial if available — Secret units may require a harder preset stage but reward the exact evolution item upon completion.

Gather secondary crafting materials from the Crafting station recipe list. Megumat's recipe typically requires star fruit variants and Yen — farm Yen through story stages with a Ramen Guy or Stone Alchemist on your team. Once all materials are collected, open the Evolution station, select Megumat, review the evolution sprite showing the upgraded form with Shadow Garden-style AoE expansion, and confirm. The evolved Megumat gains boosted DMG grades, a new passive tied to shikigami summons, and access to higher ascension tiers.

Evolution Tips and Forge Fever

Time evolutions during Forge Fever events when stat grades jump double tiers (S to SSS instead of S to S+) for maximum power gains. Evolve your primary carry first — spreading materials across five units slows your story progression. Check the evolution sprite preview for ability changes before evolving support units; some evolutions shift a unit from single-target to AoE, changing optimal placement. After evolving, revisit the trait station if the unit's new role demands a different trait — a DOT-focused evolution pairs well with Draconic, while a burst DPS evolution wants Forsaken or Unbound.
